The longest serving Carry On star, Joan Sims has died at the age of 71 after a long illness.
The actress was known to millions for her roles in some two dozen Carry On movies ranging from gym mistress to empress, and became famous for her false refinement.
The daughter of an Essex stationmaster graduated from RADA in 1950 before working in repertory and before long was appearing the London stage, in films and on television.
In her first film in 1953 Will Any Gentleman she starred opposite with George Cole and with few quiet periods in her career she became one of the great comic performers of British cinema.
Her most recent movie was the BBC's Last Of The Blonde Bombshells in which she starred with Dame Judi Dench. The BBC online news site carries a vast collection of comments from friends and fellow actors.
