intro

80s music magnate Tony Wilson has spoken out against Michael Winterbottom's film of his life.

The co-founder of Factory Records who founded The Happy Mondays and New Order is reported to be distinctly unhappy about Steve Coogan's portrayal of his life in 24-Hour Party People.

The keenly awaited film charts the birth of punk in 1976 through to the collapse of the groundbreaking record company in 1992. Coogan stars alongside Ralf Little, Paddy Considine, John Simm and Danny Cunningham as Shaun Ryder.

Wilson spoke out during a ten-minute presentation of the film with Winterbottom at the Cambridge Film Festival. While he respects Winterbottom, and producer Andrew Eaton, Wilson disliked the constant mention of his Cambridge degree.

The record producer also stipulated that the cocaine, a large quantity of which was found at the company's office prior to its demise, be changed to cannabis in the film. Equally, Cunningham's Ryder was seen mainlining heroin in the original script but is now seen chasing the dragon. The evidence of the right-wing hate group and the implication that he favoured sex with prostitutes also bothered Wilson but Winterbottom maintained that his latest film is merely "broad fictional retelling", but agreed that it "shouldn't be taken as the gospel truth." 24-Hour Party People has yet to be given a release date.
