intro
The enduring British actress Helen Mirren was at the sharp end of the critic's pen in the States recently for her role in the new British comedy, Greenfingers.

The film about the green fingers of prisoners in a British prison was released in the States last week and is being likened by US critics in tone, but slated in comparison, to the British hits, Billy Elliot and The Full Monty.

The low-budget feature has an all-British cast including Clive Owen and David Kelly and Warren Clarke, Mirren plays an expert gardener helping a group of lifers find the road to spiritual health through horticulture.

Of the comparison to the northern musicals the actress claims, "It's lighter than the Full Monty - it's more comedic. The Full Monty was a wonderful film and if we're as good I'll be very proud of that."

However, American critics have termed the effort as "hackneyed" and "unauthentic" perhaps wary of the fact that the film was written and directed by an American, Joel Hershman, and produced, funded and distributed without a single pound sterling. An understandable concern in that the film is attempting to replicate the successes of genuine British comedies by employing quaint British talent for an American audience, or their accents at least.
