intro

Cats & Dogs asserted itself on the UK box office last week with a £2.7m take that sees it stay in first place for the second week in a row. The Steve Coogan comedy The Parole Officer opened very well with £1m on half as many screens.

Cats & Dogs' dominance is a predictable, and many believe, short lived success however with Planet of the Apes hitting UK screens as you read but the talk of the weekend from a British perspective was the Coogan vehicle.

The film opened in fifth place, with just under £1m but that statistic betrays its performance. Coogan's first screen role hasn't smashed any Billy Elliot type records but given that it opened on half as many screens as Cats & Dogs, the film still managed a very respectable £3000 per screen average.

Indeed, that result should prompt a much broader distribution, if not already planned, and we could well be seeing another comedy hit.
