Audiences across Europe will decided the winners by casting their votes before Berlin's awards ceremony on December 1.

In the best director category Bridget Jones's Sharon Maguire is up against Lasse Hallström for Chocolat, the film star, Juliette Binoche, is pitted against her co-star, Lena Olin, Captain Corelli's Penelope Cruz and Enemy's Rachel Weisz.

British stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth from Bridget Jones face Jude Law for his role as a sniper in Enemy at the Gates and Ray Winstone from Sexy Beast.

In the best director nominations, Ridley Scott is in contention for Hannibal against Jean-Pierre Jeunet for the opening film at this year's Edinburgh film festival, Amelie.
