Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Montmartre comedy Amelie has won the Audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival but their was little mood for celebration.
The organisers understandably chose to cancel all parties and events at the high profile festival in light of recent events and the winners announcement was tastefully low key. Taking place in a pressroom instead of the usual glittery afternoon ceremony, there was a mood of sombre professionalism throughout.
Although void of an international competition Zacharias Kunuk's epic Inuit debut Atanarjuat The Fast Runner, previously won the Camera D'Or winner at Cannes this year, won the award for Best Canadian Film. The Volkswagen Discovery Award to Chicken Rice War by Chee K of Singapore and the FIPRESCI Award went to Inch'allah Dimanche by Yamina Benguigui of France.
The winners were not invited to speak on receiving their awards.
