In the global survey by Film Export UK the economic nosedive has rekindled the aged argument of whether it is worth buyers and sellers attending both markets for the simple reason that US companies stop over in London and, thereforefeel obliged to attend London as well. The report stated that a tiny percentage were in favour of continuing both. LS was favoured by a fifth of those questioned above MIFED but the crucial stat was that only 5% weren't bothered where 'the one market' should take place. With a drop in attendance likely at both events due to flight trepidation and the effects of global recession, London could well find itself fighting for survival this year. There is the possibility however that, even if attendance is down by the predicted 20%, companies will choose one or the other and it may as well be the first. Screen International quoted a broad range of opinions from key players and the mood doesn't appear bright but Brit players are certainly keen to play down the 'deserted streets' view that has infected buyers. Of course, the sellers are expected to turn up regardless of statistics and one insider hinted that, despite fears the market will not be the washout people are predicting. |
