Gosford Park director Robert Altman has openly accused the major studios, indeed, Hollywood of inspiring terrorism with their movies.
In an interview with the Associated Press the veteran M*A*S*H director blamed the September 11 act on films, such as Die Hard, True Lies etc for providing inspiration to terrorists.
"The movies set the pattern, and these people have copied the movies. Nobody would have thought to commit an atrocity like that unless they'd seen it in a movie." He continued, "How dare we continue to show this kind of mass destruction in movies. ... I just believe we created this atmosphere and taught them how to do it."
Many observers recognised how shockingly cinematic the tragedy was, as it appeared on their screens but on a moral level the near future is bleak as, astonishingly, Hollywood writers are being recruited by the US military as advisors.
Variety reported this week that working groups of writers and directors have been meeting US army spy operatives at the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technology.
Apparently, major industry creatives have been brainstorming together to advise the US government on possible terrorist situations, plots if you like. Whether those same creatives will be guaranteed copyright on any scenarios that actually arise is not known.
