Sundance 2002 will be choked with vibrant filmmaking talent as usual. Debuts and long-awaited returns blended with inspired creative collaborations - and the odd British film.
This year sees veteran indies like Gus Van Sant, the exciting John Malkovich debut and Mira Nair's latest after the immense critical acclaim of Monsoon Wedding . Music vid supremo, Michel Gondry dispalys his flick, written by Being John Malkovich scribe Charlie Kaufman, which was headed by fellow pop promo guru Spike Jonze.
Inside tips to look out for are Moises Kaufmans true story based, play adapted The Laramie Project, Van Sant's improvised, dessert shot, Jerry and Hysterical Blindness (the festival's Centrepiece Premiere)from India's golden girl, Mira Nair.
In the World Cinema section are two British films, Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday, the first cinematic attempt at the 1972 Derry massacre and Marc Munden's romcom thriller Miranda starring Christina Ricci (also in The Laramie Project), John Hurt, John Simm and Kyle Maclachlan.
Other Brits on show are Crush, Jez Butterworth's Birthday Girl with Nicole Kidman (as a mail order Russian bride) and Ben Chaplin and Peter Catanneo's rather unfortunate Lucky Break. Also of noteis doc king Nick Broomfield's fascinating LA Story, which digs deep into the fatal feud between West coast's Tupac Shakur and East coast's Biggie Smalls.
