Screening
at Truro this weekend at the Celtic Film Festival is
One Life Stand, made digitally by Glasgow film-maker
May Miles Thomas. This film has been acclaimed in many
forums. It is her first feature film and has been shown
at 15 international festivals. It won five awards at
the last Scottish BAFTAs, including the Scottish Screen
award for outstanding achievement.
While
her name isnt yet as instantly recognisable as
that of fellow-Glaswegian Lynne Ramsay, Thomas is working
on a clutch of projects that could cement her growing
reputation as one of Scotlands most exciting new
filmmakers. Definitely a writer and director to look
out for.
Look out for her planned second feature, Solid Air,
about the fate of Clydeside shipyard workers who suffer
crippling breathing problems from exposure to asbestos.
At
41, Thomas has been working in the film industry for
over a decade. It took her eight years and 22 screenplays
before she was able to make a film.
One
Life Stand was only completed after Thomas gave
up applying for funding and bought a digital camcorder,
shooting the film herself with the minimum of fuss and
technology.
An interview with May Miles Thomas appeared earlier
in Netribution and can be found in our Features archive.
