Ireland & Wales top Celtic at Truro

Ireland and Wales took the major share of the awards at this year’s Celtic Film Festival in Truro, gaining seven awards each, with RTE taking the Jury Award for Primetime: Behind Closed Doors and Robert Quinn gaining the Frank Copplestone First Time Director Award for An Leabhar, ROSG. S4C took The Spirit of the Festival Award for the Apt Films and September Films production of Solomon A Gaenor, for Wales.

The Short Drama Award went to Britanny for Les Filles Du 12, by Paris Brest Productions for TV Breizh. New Media Award went to E Brezhoneg Pa Gar!! from Sumdi, and Britanny also gained the Education Award for Petra Larez.

Scotland took awards for Arts Documentary and Radio: Celtic Music categories, produced separately by a husband and wife team from Inverness, Bruce McGregor and Liza Mulholland. Bruce’s programme was James Scott Skinner: The Strathspey King 1843-1927, about the most important musician in the history of Scottish traditional music who rose via his music from humble beginnings to become one of the first transcontinental superstars. The three part dramatised series was made for BBC Radio Scotland.

Bruce’s wife, Liz Mulholland took the award for Arts Documentary with Murchadh MacPharlain; Bard Mhealaboist, a profile of the renowned Gaelic poet and songwriter Murchadh MacPharlain from the Isle of Lewis, who is an inspiration for many of today’s leading Gaelic singers. The film was produced by Liz Mulholland and directed by Iain F. Macleod on behalf of Metagama Productions for BBC Scotland.
