Fire Fighters Chew Over Fat Fire

An investigation got underway this week into the cause of a fire at a television and film studio in Glasgow.

Over 30 firefighters fought to control the blaze at the Comedy Unit, in the Maryhill area of the city, which started at around 2330 BST on Saturday.

The Comedy Unit - which is an independent production company - is responsible for making programmes like the BBC Scotland hit Chewin' the Fat.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire Brigade said that six fire crews were called to the blaze at the complex of studios, offices and store rooms at Craigmont Street.

He said that the fire was quickly brought under control and that efforts to establish the cause were continuing.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said the fire was not thought to be suspicious.

Chewin' the Fat - which has its own particularly Scottish brand of humour - has been a success on both sides of the border.

It has propelled former stand-up comedians Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan to cult status.

Gonnae no dae that, a catchphrase from the show, has made it onto the dance floors of Scotland in a track by club DJ known as Daddy Cool.

Hemphill was elected rector of Glasgow University in March, ahead of show co-star Karen Dunbar.

Colin Gilbert, who manages the Comedy Unit, also produced Rab C Nesbitt.
