Met Film School Launches Two-year BA in Filmmaking

The Metropolitan Film SchoolThe Metropolitan Film School, Ealing Studios, London has unveiled its new two-year BA degree in filmmaking. Commencing in October 2007, the course offers practical training in digital film production at a level of intensity offered nowhere else in the UK at undergraduate level, with an estimated contact time with tutors of 50% compared with the university norm of 20%.

Jonny Persey, the School Director and producer of upcoming award-winning feature documentary Deep Water, says: "Creating a professional working environment is crucial to this course and we are focused from the beginning on our students' first steps into the industry after graduation. By the end of the course, students will have a showreel, a sound academic foundation in film, as well as the unique experience of working on a live feature film."

As well as providing a comprehensive introduction to the narrative skills required for successful visual storytelling and specialist training in writing, directing and producing fiction and documentary, the course also grounds students in hands-on skills in cinematography, editing and sound design. A parallel course of academic film study allows students both to explore the history of the subject and to place their own filmmaking within a broader cultural context. Furthermore, during their second year students will be able to work on the development, production, marketing and distribution of a feature film.

He goes on to say: "The Met's aim is to inspire the next generation of independent filmmakers by providing highly practical training. The success of our One-Year Practical Filmmaking programme inspired us to partner with Thames Valley University to bring the same ‘learning by doing' approach to our first degree programme. In fact students from our one-year course, by taking an additional conversion course, will be able to join the BA programme in its second year."
