Crazy Monkey Sneaks Hit Movie Into London

Crazy Monkey make a sneak appearance in LondonSurprise South African hit The Crazy Monkey movie Straight Outta Benoni is going to London on the Sunday the 9th of April for two sneak previews. The two lead actors and writers/creators will be there as well as the production team. Straight Outta Benoni, had a long and fruitful cinema run in South Africa.

Sssh! Don't wake the lion. We are not supposed to be here!Brendan Jack of The Crazy Monkey says: “Like everyone in South Africa, we grew up watching American and British films from a young age. We wanted the chance to represent South Africa on celluloid and to create something that was almost about people who grew up watching Hollywood films.”

“The main characters in Straight Outta Benoni have definitely seen too much MTV and want to be part of the bling lifestyle. But coming from smalltown Benoni, it takes a loud voice to be heard by the rest of the world. It’s sort of autobiographical. But not.”

“It was a privilege to get to make this movie. Despite the laidback nature of the main cast, it took a lot of effort to get it onto the big screen. Hundreds of people from all over contributed in making this project come alive. And they continue to contribute, because the process isn’t over yet.”

“We’re stoked to be given the chance to show the film in London,” Jack says. “ It’s a cool city, and one of the hippest places in the world. Except for Acton Town. We started out with our MTV clips through MTV London… they supported us from the start, so it feels good to be going back there with a feature. To show them what they helped start.”

   EXPAT SELLOUT EXPECTED

It's expected there could be a solid turn-out of expatriate South Africans to the Hammersmith Riverside this weekend. Jack urges themnot to miss the opportunity.

“Why should South Africans come and see it? Because the drinks are on me. And hey, how many times does Benoni come to visit? The last time such a big East Rand presence happened was when Gavin Williams’ Benoni crew arrived at Heathrow en masse. London has never been the same.”

“It’s quite amazing how many South Africans are in London now. And no matter where you are, there’s a lot to celebrate about our country. We like to think that we’re part of this growing spirit of creativity and positivity. Viva bru!”

But what the fans will see on the big screen is different from what they are used to from MTV appearances, as Jack explains.

“The fans should come and check out how we’ve adapted our headspace to the big screen. It’s a bit of a departure from the MTV sketches, and its something different and offbeat. How often do you get to sneak in a Klippies and cola into the Riverside cinemas in Hammersmith and have a laugh at a South African movie? We look forward to seeing everyone there.”
